Custom Ductile Iron Parts

At Modo Rapid, we provide custom ductile iron parts to meet the unique needs of our clients. We specialize in custom ductile iron parts, including various grades such as QT400-QT800 and high-strength, high-ductility grades like QT600-10 and QT700-10. We also work with high (medium) silicon molybdenum heat-resistant ductile iron, high nickel ductile iron (D5S/QTANiSiCr3552), cast stainless steel (Cr26Ni14Nb2), and high-grade gray cast iron. Additionally, we have extensive experience in producing quenched ductile iron.

What is Ductile iron?

Ductile iron, sometimes referred to as nodular cast iron, spheroidal graphite iron, or SG iron, is a type of cast iron characterized by its high graphite content. This material was first developed in 1943 by Keith Millis. Unlike traditional cast iron, which tends to be brittle and weak under tension, ductile iron is notable for its superior impact and fatigue resistance. This is primarily due to the presence of spherical graphite nodules within its microstructure.

In January 1931, Augustus F. Meehan secured U.S. patent 1,790,552 for a method involving the addition of calcium silicide to iron, which produced what became known as Meehanite ductile iron. This process remains in use today. Later, in October 1949, Keith Dwight Millis, Albert Paul Gagnebin, and Norman Boden Pilling, affiliated with INCO, were granted U.S. patent 2,485,760 for a method employing magnesium to create ductile iron, marking a significant advancement in the production of this versatile material.

Ductile iron Applications

A significant portion of ductile iron production is used for pipes in water and sewer systems, competing with lighter polymers like PVC and HDPE that require damage protection. In the automotive industry, ductile iron provides greater strength than aluminum at a lower cost than steel.

It’s also vital in off-highway diesel trucks, class 8 trucks, agricultural tractors, oil well pumps, and wind power components. Additionally, ductile iron is used in piano harps and vises for its superior strength and durability compared to traditional cast iron.

What custom ductile iron parts can we make for you?

Modo Rapid can produce automotive exhaust pipes, water-cooled exhaust pipes, ductile iron panels, brackets, automotive shock absorber brackets, lower fork arm brackets, rocker arms, balance shafts, and more.

In July 2018, Modo Rapid, a manufacturer certified with the IATF 16949:2016 quality management system, reinforced its commitment to quality control. The company is equipped with advanced testing equipment, including a molten iron management analyzer, a direct-reading spectrometer, an automatic metallographic analyzer, a Brinell hardness tester, and a microcomputer digital display universal strength testing machine. These instruments provide robust support for on-site control and post-production quality assurance. Currently, the company has an annual production capacity of 3,000 tons of high-grade castings. We collaborate with numerous major equipment and automotive companies.
